On Violence and Peace

(derived from an exchange on the I AM email list)

Gene: Here is a question: What is the difference between "non-violence" and "anti-violence?"

Bruce: "Non-violence" is the simple absence of violence. "Anti-violence" is the intention to end violence by opposition, which itself may be either violent or non-violent.

The word that is not used is peace. Peace exists without reference or comparison to violence, peace is, in and of itself. Even Gandhi and MLK were in the grips of violence, "non-" and "anti-" notwithstanding.

Consider: "Comply or I'll kill you." -- Hitler

"Comply or I'll kill me." -- Gandhi

Tim: "Peace" however can not be "achieved" without "correction" and can not be "maintained" without "full awareness." Cart or horse?

Bruce: Neither, really -- peace is intrinsic to "full awareness," in the absence of such awareness "non-violence" is the best we can do since there inevitably is violence.
