Kal: Imprisonment in Time

Maharaj Charan Singh Ji (from "Spiritual Letters," published by Radha Soami Satsang, Beas, India): Kal --- Lit. means Time or Death; the time spirit; the name given to the Power that controls all the three worlds, which are perishable. Kal rules and regulates the whole universe ---gross, subtle and causal --- and will not let anyone cross his threshold to enter the realm of Sat Purush, until that soul has been thoroughly cleansed of all desires, etc.

Guruji points to a very important truth -- "Kal" manifests in human consciousness as the filtering and occluding effect of thought and the thought-form of individual identity, the "ego" or "small self." The resulting thought-driven perceptual mode includes a sense of psychological time, which is the mother of impatience, aggression, greed, and many related emotional states based on an ongoing feeling that we are "becoming," living in and for an imagined future. In the absence of thought's distortions and occlusions is the end of imprisonment in time and the first and last step into the eternal, the end of becoming and the transformational discovery of pure being, the divine birthright and natural perceptual state of humanity.
